Albert Hafner is Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at the University of Bern, Switzerland. In addition to his academic career, he worked for many years in archaeological heritage management and played a key role in the successful UNESCO World Heritage nomination of the “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps.” He studied in Tübingen and Freiburg im Breisgau (PhD), and later completed his habilitation in Zurich. His research focuses on submerged prehistoric settlements, the development of innovative methods for large-scale rescue excavations, and the investigation of waterlogged sites with exceptional organic preservation. His work has been supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the European Research Council. Alongside his role in the ICUCH of ICOMOS, he is a member of several archaeological associations and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
