Chris has a PhD from the University of Southern Denmark focused on the public’s relationship with underwater cultural heritage, a Master’s degree in maritime archaeology from Southampton University and an education studies degree from the University of Portsmouth. His first experience in underwater archaeology was in 1978 when he joined the Mary Rose Project, ultimately becoming co-responsible for implementing the work programme leading to the recovery of Mary Rose, in 1982.

Current professional affiliations Chris is a researcher with Argentina’s Programa de Arqueología Subacuática, within the Instituto Nacional de Antropología, Argentina and also an associate researcher of the Instituto de Diversidad y Evolución Austral (IDEAus)-Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas (CONICET). He is currently President of the International Committee on the Underwater Cultural Heritage (ICOMOS) consultant to the Center for Ocean and Undersea Technology Research, Tamkang University, Taiwan and a member of the editorial board of the peer reviewed Journal of Maritime Archaeology.
