
Augusto Salgado
Captain Port Navy (RET)
Captain Portuguese Navy (RET), Augusto Salgado, holds a PhD in History of the Discoveries from the School of Arts and Humanities (FLUL) and is currently Director of the Portuguese Maritime Museum (Museu de Marinha) in Lisbon. As an Associate Professor (guest) at the same school, he teaches the Doctorate in Maritime History, the master’s courses in Maritime History and Military History. He chairs the Underwater Archaeology course in the BA at the same Faculty. He was a professor of Naval History at the Instituto Universitário Militar and the Portuguese Navy Academy (Escola Naval) between 2010 and 2021. He is a researcher at the Navy Research Centre (CINAV) and the FLUL History Centre, where he coordinates that centre’s Military History Research Group.
He is an Emeritus member of the Academia de Marinha, an effective member of the Portuguese Commission on Military History and an International Corresponding Member of the Institute of Geography and Military History of Brazil.
An amateur diver and underwater photographer for over 40 years, since 1993, he regularly participates in underwater archaeology activities. He has been, among others, a coordinator of the research projects Actions of the U-35 in the Algarve (2014-2019) and the Research Project History and Archaeology of Conflict (HistArC).
