Professional biography

Dragomir Garbov holds a BA, MA and a PhD in Archaeology from the New Bulgarian University in Sofia, Bulgaria. Between 2013 and 2017 he worked in the Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Sozopol (Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria) where he is now an associate researcher.

His current academic interests are focused on wooden shipbuilding and seafaring in the Golden Age of Sail, maritime connectivity and coastal and maritime human landscapes. The main topic of his current research is continuity and change in seafaring practices along the Western Black Sea in the late 18th and 19th centuries, or the clash between local tradition and globalization as reflected in the evolution of society, economy and seafaring technology.

Dragomir is a core member of the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (Black Sea MAP, www.blackseamap.com) and directed the underwater excavations of the St. Nicholas Bay Shipwreck in Chernomorets, Bulgaria in 2015. He holds a number of recreational and commercial diving licences.
